I would like to thank everyone who came to our 31st Annual Ottawa Valley Giant Scale fun fly in Kingston this year. After a wet-weather Friday, Saturday and Sunday were dry and sunny for the 100 registered pilots.
The campers started arriving on Tuesday with the parking lot full by our Saturday official start date. By looking at the pit area, you would think you were at a fair ground with all the people and tents setup. The flying started shortly after our pilots meeting and anthems were played. Of the well over 200 planes you would have to say that it was a good mix of all types on the ground and in the air. The same went for the pilots. It was good to see that those new to an event like this were encouraged in the air alongside the veterans.
We shut down the regular flying at noon for a prize draw and the annual group photo, pictured above.
The rest of the day was steadily filled with flying from all skills of pilots and once again no midair mishaps. Despite gusting cross winds, the sky was never empty. The flight line traffic bosses made of volunteer pilots did an outstanding job of keeping the flight line organized watching that pilots followed the proper traffic pattern.
At 4:30 we did the closing ceremonies for the day and started the pilot draws for prizes. The flight line banner displayed all the sponsors and this year was especially well supported. As was mentioned at the opening pilots meeting, we did so again at the closing that every sponsor on the board represents their advertising dollars at work and they deserve our support when it comes to making purchases.
For the last few years, we offered an incentive to register early, and this year’s prize was an Aeroworks 50cc Extra 260 Quick Build ARF. This helps us pre-process your registration, guaranteeing an event T shirt in the pilot's selected size and lets them just pick up their package on arrival.
Of the 70 pilots who took advantage of this offer, Dave Penchuk's lucky number finally came up. The prize draws were awesome and all you had to do was look at the sponsor banner at the flight line to see who to thank for this. I’m sure that more will be taking advantage of this next year.
Our Saturday evening dinner was once again catered by the Kingston RC Modelers with a feast of BBQ chicken, corn on the cob, baked potato, plus salads and desert.
I want to thank all the pilots for attending and making this the premier event that it has become. I also want to thank all the volunteers that helped out to bring this event together.
Our sponsors make this event what it is and allowed us to give away over $7000 worth of prizes.
In an environment of increasing competition for event sponsorship, we are so grateful for our sponsors like Aircraft Modeler's Research, Great Hobbies, and RC Guys, who provided ARF kits and other goodies. Ottawa Fastener Supply helped out with T-shirts. Model Airplane News gave every pilot a magazine. Altecare RC supplied Hysol and Tru-Turn Spinners, Best Pilots, B&E Graphics and Boca Bearings provided product discounts.
Please mark your calendars for next year, two weekends before Labour Day on August 17 - 18 / 2019 and we would love to see you again.
